Instructor: Michael David Sturlin

Through the process of sawing, goldsmiths delicately pierce intricate and complex designs in metal. Aside from being an essential skill, piercing is only the beginning of what a saw will do. In skilled hands, a saw can act as a file and as a graver. These techniques, when fully explored and mastered, open great opportunities for creativity, technical virtuosity and design in metal and by transferring designs from paper. Watch as a master demonstrates basic and advanced piercing on flat and domed forms plus tricks for creating three-dimensional shapes from a pierced sheet. Practice first in copper and brass and then execute a complex three-dimensional pierced pendant in silver. 16 hours
