Chasing, Engraving & Saw Piercing

Traditional work, from Cellini to Lalique, features details that are carved into metal by chasing, engraving, and saw piercing. Today, these labor-intensive techniques are rarely seen, except in the finest traditional styles. With the use of hammers, punches, gravers, and saws, participants learn to carve and sculpt in bas relief to give the feeling of depth to metal. Instruction covers tool making, sharpening gravers, and tuning up saw frames and hammers. Participants learn to create floral and geometric motifs, to give depth and classical character to your work. Prerequisite: Fabrication 2 or experience.

Tom Herman will also teach Stone Setting & Saw Piercing, April 21-22, 2012.
