| April 25-26, 2009 from 9 am - 5 pm | $399 + $30 kit |

Gem cutting opens a vast range of sculptural shapes and brilliant colors for use in jewelry. Unlike any other medium, transparent and translucent gemstones are ideal for cutting with nearly unlimited possibilities for striking and mesmerizing colors, lustrous shapes and brilliant surfaces. Investigate how reflection, refraction, brilliance, and color can be utilized when cutting gems. Using transparent material such as aquamarine, tourmaline, amethyst, citrine, and rock crystal you will learn basic lapidary techniques for cutting, with an emphasis on maximizing the optics of gems. Information includes an explanation and discussion of refraction, reflection, optical interference, and more. Open to all levels.

Bernd Munsteiner is a third generation gemstone cutter, and the most innovative and widely known in history. Born and trained in Idar Oberstein, Germany’s traditional lapidary center, Bernd has won countless awards and immeasurable acclaim worldwide. His impact is so pervasive that the name “Munsteiner” has come to describe an entire genre of lapidary art. The Revere Academy is the only place Bernd has ever taught, outside of apprentices in his own workshop.
