Class Description
Here is a great chance to learn all sorts of connecting techniques. Begin with four kinds
of rivets: tube, countersunk, raised, and invisible. Then learn how to make your own
screws with a watchmaker’s tap and die set. Instruction covers four soldering techniques: pick, sweat, place, and pinch, as well as fusing. Discover ingenious ways to use tabs, clips, and other cold connections to hold things together. Holding with tweezers, clips, investment plaster, and Krazy Glue for soldering will be discussed. Learn how to maintain high detail and contrast while executing with precise craftsmanship.
This is a project-oriented class. Students learn new connecting techniques as they
build panels to become a hinged bracelet or separate pendants. Other projects include
a riveted three-layer ring, a pod-form pendant, and a shackle-style ring. Advanced students may choose to make an adjustable shank ring or more elaborate project with help from the instructor. Prerequisite: Fabrication 1 or experience.
Wayne Werner is a third-generation metalsmith from Baltimore, Maryland. He makes his living as a jewelry maker and has participated in over 200 high-end craft shows nationally. Wayne received the World Gold Council’s Gold Distinction Award and MJSA’s Vision Award for Mokume Gane.
