History of Revere Pliers

by Alan Revere

These pliers were inspired by an article I wrote for AJM Magazine.  In the article I describe  how to remove the brightly colored plastic handles (because they are distracting and feel soft) and also the springs (because they make you work harder and feel less).

Shortly afterwards,  I was asked  to design a set of pliers that would meet my expectations.  I was invited  to a small German workshop where pliers are still made by hand.  I knew what I wanted:  sturdy pliers with un-plated metal grips and no springs. While bare metal handles were preferable to plastic-coated ones,  I wanted a more functional and unique grip than anything that was available.  Using sample patterns filed onto my own pliers,  I created a new and improved grip.  Special tooling had to be made to create the grip pattern, which adds surface contact,  increases sensivity,  adds kinesthetic feedback and control.

The exceptional pliers that you are holding in your hands were manufactured to my specifications.  From the rough blank to final finish,  each pair of pliers goes through over 50 steps in forming, shaping,  grinding,  texturing,  and finishing.  A final #240 grit finish on the jaws leaves a  “tooth” that holds metal without slipping or marring.
