Yurman Class on Creativity Sold Out at Revere Academy

Jewelry designer David Yurman will teach a class called The Complete Designer at San Francisco's Revere Academy of Jewelry Arts on April 27-29, 2009. Mr. Yurman, who is widely regarded for his signature designs and marketing acumen, is one of the most successful American jewelry designers of our time. For the first time, David Yurman will share his experience and expertise with a group of students.

The class was totally sold out within days of announcement. “As soon as we opened up the class, we were inundated and the class filled right away,” said Alan Revere, the school’s founder. “David is an American icon and he has unique experiences and unparalleled success to reflect upon and share. We are happy to be able to bring his knowledge to a serious group of aspiring designers, during our 30th anniversary Masters Symposium.”
 
 The Complete Designer is about creativity. The 3-day workshop is a unique opportunity to work with David Yurman, whose creativity has led him to the forefront of international jewelry design. The company that David and Sybil Yurman founded has grown into an internationally recognized brand that, with 17 boutiques and over 400 authorized points of distribution worldwide, has been able to successfully fuse art, fashion and fine jewelry.
 
David will lead a group through a series of projects and exercises to demonstrate and enhance creativity. "I intend to impart my knowledge of creative exploration as applied to the concepts, philosophy, and technical and engineering feasibility of a design, all the way through marketing."
 
David Yurman's workshop is part of the Revere Academy's annual Masters Symposium in April. This year marks the school's 30th anniversary and it is celebrating with a high profile lineup of jewelry stars, each teaching their area of specialization. The list features Michael Good teaching Anticlastic Raising, Kent Raible teaching Granulation, Bernd Munsteiner teaching Gem Cutting, Jean Stark teaching Ancient Rings, Harlan Butt teaching Enameling, Christo Kiffer teaching Pavé Setting and more.

Revere Announces Mort Abelson Scholarship

Here’s a new contest in which jewelry designers can win something that will truly help them. San Francisco’s Revere Academy of Jewelry Arts has announced the Mort Abelson Scholarship for its upcoming International Masters Symposium in April.


The contest honors Mort Abelson, who was instrumental in raising the awareness of jewelry design and promoting jewelry designers in the U.S. As President of Jewelers of America from 1975-1977, and then as director until 1995, Mort was responsible for overseeing the massive JA International Trade Show in New York. In order to spice up what was devolving into an ocean of look alike commercial jewelry, Mort had the brilliant idea to bring in a new group of exciting young designers each year. Under the banner, New Designer Gallery, Mort introduced hundreds of talented newcomers over the next three decades. Many launched their careers in the New Designer Gallery and have continued to make their marks as leaders in the field;  David Yurman, Esther Gallant, Whitney Boin, Diana Vincent, Steven Kretchmer, Eddie Sakamoto, Tom Kruskal, Penny Preville, Alex Sepkus, Susan Sadler and many more. Among the list is Alan Revere, who is also one of the country’s preeminent jewelry educators, teaching at the school he founded in 1979. As a designer and also a leader in jewelry training, with a long affiliation with Jewelers of America, Revere’s Academy was selected as the scholarship site. The contest winner will receive an all-expenses-paid scholarship from anywhere in the US to San Francisco (air, lodging, tuition and fees) for a master class of their choice.

With an entry deadline of January 1, 2009, and an entry fee of $25, the contest is open to anyone in the United States. A jury composed of Mort Abelson, Alan Revere, and Cindy Edelstein of the Jewelers Resource Bureau, will select the winner. Jurors will be looking for an individual whose work exemplifies original, innovative, high quality jewelry design. Learn more.

The scholarship is applicable to the Academy’s annual International Masters Symposium in April. For three weeks, prominent jewelry artists, designers, craftsman and experts converge on San Francisco to teach professional skills and techniques in the area of their greatest expertise. Marking the Academy’s own thirtieth anniversary, the upcoming event has an impressive celebrity lineup. David Yurman will teach The Complete Designer, Michael Good will teach Anticlastic Raising, Bernd Munsteiner will teach Cutting Included Gems, Kent Raible will teach Granulation, and more.

This unique scholarship was funded by designers, for designers. At a gathering in 2007 to celebrate the thirtieth anniversary of the New Designer Gallery, an auction was held to raise funds to honor Mort in this way. Over 50 past participants of the New Designer Gallery and other jewelry artists donated a piece of their work to be auctioned, with the proceeds used for the scholarship. The artists/donors all wanted to acknowledge and thank Mort for his support in a way that perpetuates his energy and insight and helps up-and-coming jewelry designers. By paying back with their own creations, these generous artists are completing the circle and are paving the way for the next generation of jewelry designers.

Revere Holds 30th Anniversary Masters Symposium

The Revere Academy will hold a world-class series of workshops during its 2009 Masters Symposium, held from April 3 -29 in San Francisco. The Academy will host 14 master classes taught by leading goldsmiths and other experts from around the globe. Classes are open to students at all levels.

To celebrate its 30th anniversary, Revere has booked an all-star lineup for its Masters Symposium. For the first time in history, legendary jewelry designer David Yurman will share his passion, knowledge and creativity in a class called, The Complete Designer. Michael Good, one of the most successful jewelry designers of our time, will teach his signature techniques in two classes on Anticlastic Raising. Jean Stark, a leading force in the renaissance of ancient jewelry making techniques, will demonstrate, step-by-step, how to make ten Ancient Rings as well as teach a class on Loop-in Loop Chains. Bernd Munsteiner will travel from Idar Oberstein, Germany’s traditional lapidary center, to teach Designing & Cutting Included Gemstones and Optics & Reflections. Fabrizio Aquafresca, who comes from a long line of Italian master craftsmen, will travel from Italy to share his special techniques in Chasing & Repoussé. Harlan Butt will share his passion and expertise in his classes on Cloisonné Enameling as well as Basse Taille, Stencil & Straffitto. Stone setters won’t want to miss the chance to train with Christo Kiffer and learn his innovative techniques in Advanced Pavé Setting. And Suzanne Pugh’s class Steel Simplified is perfect for those looking to expand the repertoire of their work and materials. Kent Raible will teach classical Granulation in 18k Gold.

This is an opportunity to learn from top-notch jewelry artisans, teaching 2 and 5-day workshops in the areas of their greatest expertise. Most classes are open to students at all levels; from absolute beginner to advanced. Each week during its Masters Symposium, the Academy hosts a Wednesday evening lecture/reception for visiting masters, open to the public.
