Hori-Japanese Engraving with Naohiro Yamada
April 21-25
$1299 + kit
An entire palette of organic forms are found in traditional Japanese patterns and ornaments. In this class you will learn to engrave straight and curved lines in beautiful, suggestive forms borrowed from nature. You will learn to make your own Katakiri Tagane and Kebori Tagane, tools used for engraving. These tools are used to carve into the surface, imparting images of cherry and plum blossoms, bamboo, maple leaves and dragons, all using uniquely Japanese methods. Plus, learn niiro, a Japanese patina. Those with previous experience are challenged to engrave more complex designs. The tool kit includes Japanese items. Open to all levels. Naohiro will also teach Zougan - Japanese Inlay, April 14-18, and Advanced Hori & Zougan, April 26-27.
Naohiro Yamada is a master metalsmith who trained in traditional Japanese metal techniques including Zougan (inlay) and Hori (engraving).
